Speaking as a former grocery bagger, they put the soap in a separate bag so the perfume doesn’t permeate your food–allow they probably could have safely added it to the paper towels…
i’d think its very considerate of them to prevent poisoning by keeping things that could make you ill on a different bag.
wasteful, yes, but i rather not eat soap/shampoo/bleach with my next meal.
The thing that irks me the most is when I buy a single item that has a handle, and they deftly put it in a bag before I can tell them I don’t want or need a bag; then if I do tell them this, they throw the bag away. Sigh.
But why was the quart of milk in its own bag?
Who has been poisoned by packaged soap?
As another former bagger, the milk was in its own bag because the old ladies get very angry when you put too much into one bag. It is then TOO HEAVY! So, you learn to not over burden any single bag. These same ladies will bring back their rolls, fruit, what have you, if they smell like soap and demand a refund. The number of times someone has been poisoned by soap smell is approximately never. But, why not screw the planet – just – in – case!
Sorry to hear of your financial woes of late. All the best to Mr. Chen too. Hope the groceries helped.
“The number of times someone has been poisoned by soap smell is approximately never.”
The number of times that comment will make me laugh is approximately infinity plus one.
I don’t buy soap at the grocery store.
I’m just saying.
I recently bought a big chunk of Parmesan cheese (mined on its home planet and then shrinkwrapped by the groovy people at New Seasons–hellooooo, Portland!) which, when I got it home, turned out to have an oddly perfume-y flavor at its outer edges. Every time I ate some, I thought about taking it back, but I never had the energy.
