  1. Wow, Dorothy. Your Donation Derby cartoons are usually pithy snippets of everyday life, which manifest their absurdity only when taken out of context in the form of a cartoon. But this one is profound. A simple statement that your friend, who was 28, the same age you will soon be, is dead, would be sad, but wouldn’t really cause your readers to connect with the event. The way you’ve presented it here–interspersed with humor, even absurdity–makes it devastating and conflicting to the reader. You’ve packed a huge emotional effect into fewer than 100 words.

    As weak as these words are: I’m sorry your friend died.

  2. I’m very sorry to hear of the death of your friend. I second Abra, you’ve represented it very strongly. I turned 28 a couple of months ago too.
