On The Good Ship Authenticity

I like the way Cat and Girl always subvert my expectations. I was thinking this was going to be a strip extolling the virtues of authenticity… not so.

I can tolerate inauthenticity up to a point, but not when someone makes Steampunk Long Fall Boots. Especially not when done badly.

Exactly, David. We must maintain high standards for our inauthenticity. I am trying to think of examples of excellence in inauthenticity. Somebody help me out, here.

Today I will be googling “Steampunk Long Fall Boots” and “Steampunk wood spaceships”. Among other things.

No need to look any farther than most of the oeuvre of Stephin Merritt, Bill. Inauthenticity at its finest.

Excellence in inauthenticity is easy to find. Take Chipotle. Or even Ruth Chris.

    Are we authentically inauthentic?

    Yeah, you wanted it smart
    But honestly I’m not smart
    No, honestly we’re never smart
We fake it, fake it all the time

Also, to David Cusk – do not worry and do not be ignorant of mercy. It will get better and we all love you.

Disney for excellence in inauthenticity. I thought of Spielberg, but he fakes it so well it bleeds into authenticity.

Dorothy, a big vote from me to turn this one into a poster. (Actually, do you ever sell originals?)

Ah, should have checked your store page first…

These days I feel that I am much more tolerant of Steampunk Long Fall Boots, whatever they may be
