Spite for the baby boomers that boomed babies into oblivion so Gerber could bring up a healthy batch of old fashioned American dreamers: “Dream of our dream” Hah! When has a kid ever done what they’re told?
Constant progress is an absurd way to structure a society with fixed resources. The next few generations are going to need to deny themselves the crazy consumption oriented lifestyles that cheap energy let the boomers have. Our kids are going to be confused by all the empty, neighborhood sized stores every few miles.
The Boomers believed the lie, and the Xers rejected it to feel better. Now, the aging Xers are so scared of this mess we are in, they cling to the Boomers notions fast, with some Xer guilt. Examples: ‘clean coal’, ‘larger automobiles are safer’, ‘hemp? just get cotton’.
And all during this there were boomers who didn’t believe the lie, but then Cassandra was cursed with prophecy that would never be taken seriously and so were they. Continual growth is cancer and this planet will eventually reach a limit that science and technology cannot overcome. Everyone on the planet now wants a piece of the affluence, the resources are just not there. When cheap phosphate fertilizers run out its all over. Everyone worries about oil, the real issue is even more fundamental.

I think the baby boomers were the children of the people who bought houses and had jobs.

With the right illustration, “We Can Because We Can’t” would make and excellent consumer item (shirt, tote bag, whatever).

Our kids will say the same thing, you know. When they’re forced to take digital tolerance courses to make them accepting of Furry Lifestyles, I mean.
