Gym class is the worst. “Excuse me! Does it look like I want to be some weird fitness athlete person when I get a job? Does it look like I want to play any games besides kickball? I don’t think so!” said the bruised girl to her reflection in the computer screen.

Gym class is very important. It’s just that most gym teachers are touched in the head.

@M – Gym class isn’t there to train you for a career as an athlete, just as art class doesn’t (didn’t) try to make you a professional artist. While it does help the people who want those careers, its general purpose to give students an appreciation for sports and daily physical activity so they don’t just sit inside goofing around on the Internets. Also, it’s been well documented that music, art, and sports all improve mood, behavior, and cognitive function.

As Sprayette notes, however, gym teachers often ruin the fun by taking their job way too seriously and refusing to accept that some people don’t like to sprint or have no upper body strength.

I feel Boy’s pain. They’re touched in the head, maybe. Others are lazy whelps of a she-hund. When I was not but twelve, the class had to play American-style football for seven weeks. On the first day, Gym Teacher said, “Everyone knows how to play football yes ok then go play now.” I spent the next seven weeks bewildered and humiliated for an hour each day, ashamed of my ignorance and trying like mad to conceal it. So painful.

My gym teachers were mostly cool. It was usually my peers that I had issues with.

I dunno what it is about Physical Education that brings out the worst bullying and mob mentality in kids. Maybe it’s the competitiveness?
