As has been noted, the stripe of his “glasses” goes all the way around his head. Some have suggested goggles, but I think, as a cat, it may just be a pattern in his fur. He has winked before, and the mechanics would suggest it is a marking on his face,not spectacles…

The very first comic (and a few others) show goggles pretty clearly.
That doesn’t mean that is what he always wears, but its (probably) the source of why so many of us assume goggles. Its mine, anyway.
