He went because he thought he had an ear infection. After a few tests they found it was just a bit of tenacious wax. But then he became horribly ill because he caught a strain of antibiotic-resistant bacteria from a swab.
With insufficient insurance he was kicked out. He stood out in the street in the oscillating red lights of the ambulances coming and going with customers. It was raining and the sun was a moment from setting. He looked back inside. The nurse was watching him on the inside of the glass-door airlock with her arms folded. She glared at him as she picked up the phone and dialed three numbers.
He moved on into the night, on and on, in his beautiful country.
@Tacoma, IRL story. My next door neighbor went in for elective surgery and came home with MRSA. She spent the next six months dieing of it. Poor Mr. Cookie, poor Mrs. Jantzer. RIP.
