Hm… Is she putting the telescope in the sea, or is she taking somebody’s snorkel?

The text makes me think that perhaps it isn’t intended to be read classically (left to right, down, and again). After all, that’s just the proximity of the panels influencing how we perceive the “fate” of the storyline.

    Or am I overthinking this?

    It’s the retrospectoscope. Fitting, eh?

    Select:

    a) “We were meant to be together!”

    b) “We live in a 15-mile radius and frequent the same supermarket!”

I did it! I read the entire archive starting when Drew from ToothPaste for Dinner blogged about comics that link to TPfD on 12/22. I’m caught up, and now I shall subscribe. Happy new year!

“Mistake” implies that there is a difference.

When a retrospectoscope suddenly appears in the water, in close proximity to your boat, that’s got to be fate.

But what is fate saying? That you really need to start looking at your past right now?

@Erika, I think coincidence is another thing people mistake for fate.

@sad: i think its because there is a difference.

The fated retrospectoscope is saying that the unexpected appearance of mystical objects is usually a matter of coincidence. We can hardly fault the retrospectoscope for being somewhat ambivalent regarding its role in the universe.
