I love lines like “There were circumstances.” Saying something meaningless, or something that basically just means “The world exists,” is always the safest sort of vocalization. No one can ever call you a liar.
It helps if you imagine that the phrase “There Were Circumstances” is spoken in EXACTLY the same tone of voice in which you might imagine the words “Mistakes Were Made”.
