I quit watching TV in ’76 because it was mostly junk. People say I’m missing out on good stuff. Sure, there’s a pony in there somewhere but how much shoveling do you want to do to find it? Maybe I’m just too lazy to look for something worth watching. I’d rather read and/or listen to music.
Because the pony in the music world is out in the open. Oh, wait. How about in the bookstore? Hmmm…maybe under the pile of “chicken soup for the (insert label here)” books (the publisher’s version of the barn-filling product in question).
Yes, popular media sucks. If it didn’t, we couldn’t make comments about it and make ourselves feel superior for not “supporting” it. That is, in my view, kind of the point of modern media.
Btw, Boy’s comment on active curation is excellent – even the most passive forms of entertainment are still about the interaction between the work and the viewer, and is being facilitated more and more every day.
