My sciences students friends think arts students are useless and my arts students friends look at sciences students and think they’re bores. Makes me sad.
The only problem i have with art students ( Im a studying engineering) is that seems that that a requirement to you study art it to be a socialist or left wing, which i wouldnt have a problem if it were for real a not a pose, I mean Ernesto Guevera must be revolting in his grave for having a bunch of middle to upper mid class with shirt with his face while listening to his I pods and driving Lancers and Minicopers………….
At my school, the science, band and debate geeks all banded together to stave off the chorus/drama menace. The art geeks either picked a side or stayed neutral. It all depended on which teacher’s room you ate lunch in.
Sordatos, I don’t know if its a requirement for art geeks to be liberal – I’m a science geek myself – but perhaps its just that the loudest conservatives are always talking about how much of a waste of money it is to spend on supporting arts. They want to close PBS, the NEA, and while I can understand protesting some of the – odder – art out there, they seem to lump it all together. That could be because they just get exposed to the weirder stuff, like Maplethorp, and not Degas. But, heck, if one group always wanted to close down my job, I’d probably lean the other way too.
Seven years later, and we actually did save Veronica Mars, if only for a movie. Long time coming, but it came. Much like my deterioration from standardized self-importance to misplaced self-importance.
Considering that the right wing side of things is pretty anti-science (Creationism should be taught in biology class, the world is only 6,000 years old, etc.), I can see why both art and science geeks would be genuinely left-leaning.
