But there are still real woodsmen today… and cowboys, and I bet they chose it not because they had no better option, but because they like the freedom and lifestyle and nature?

    No?

Just saying, it’s hard to be a poser woodsman. A flannel shirt and a beard isn’t enough.

    Heh, no better option.

Maybe for loggers, but it gets you out of the fog ridden valleys from late fall to early spring and up into the sunshine (West of the Cascades, Oregon sucks in the Wintertime). And it was a darn sight better pay than minimum wage even though you were taking a chance at getting a log in the small of the back.

All the Working Cowboys (not them barstool fools) I currently know do it because they damn well want to do it despite the economic disadvantages that come with it. You find them East of the Cascades in that other part of Oregon that gets miserable in winter, where as one buddy defines it “Ain’t nuthin’ here but sagebrush and Jack Rabbits, and cows.”

Same in Montana. Loggers in the west, cowboys in the east, and no Ramones to be found anywhere.
