It is true! “Hipster” first gets a mention in Cat and Girl on November 12 2001. Although shirts with flames are included in the equation. So clearly the meaning has yet to be ironed out.

Dr. Evil called Austin Powers an “aging hipster” in 1997. It’s surprising how young the modern sense is.

@Sev Dr. Evil was using “hipster” to mean “hippie,” or something of the sort… certainly the meaning seems to have changed since he used it.

Sev and Erika, my best guess is that Dr. Evil was using “hipster” in the old 1940s-50s sense of a jazz enthusiast – the joke would have been at Dr. Evil’s expense, showing how he was so out of touch that he called a “hippie” a “hipster” (it would be like calling him a “beatnik”).

Well clearly, Dr. Evil was into talking about hipsters 4 years before everybody else started doing it.

Oh, you have your precious sincerity now, but one day the pendulum will swing back towards ironic detachment and we’ll all have a good sneer at its banal inevitability.

Hipster is a term that’s been around for a looong time. And it’s basically always referred to pretentious artholes, too!
