To take the TH White stance on panels 2 and 3, I think it’s best to choose ‘undone’ over ‘done’ most of the time. Here read ‘most of the time’ as ‘when no one is looking.’
From the pool of available data we may infer that girl is older than a high school graduate, did go to college, is not employed (steadily), and is getting pudgy.
Girls responsibility can only be to herself, and to exploit the machine’s works to her advantage as much as possible.
BTW, did I ever mention that I wonder how when and why the Vampire turned corporate? I mean, he’s already dead… Maybe it depends upon when you become a vampire in the first place. If it was long ago, you could live off your distributed dividends….
Two of my favorite things about C&G are the little line that forms under the eye of a stressed character, and the way everybody always develops T-Rex arms when they are frightened.
I don’t think it’s only a choice between subservience to the apparatus and ceasing to function *all of the time.* It would seem to be the most common scenario, but sometimes a certain critical mass is reached when stopping the apparatus becomes a viable option rather than simply dropping out of it.
But in a time when there’s very little class-consciousness it comes down to purely personal, moral choices all too often, and how do we build on that?
I think my father had a relapse of SCB (sickle cell bohemia) shortly before divorcing my mother… He’s now 53 with a contract based work-from-home job, a 42 foot wooden canoe end sloop in constant need of repair, and a penchant for wearing long patterned socks with shorts… I don’t think he’ll make it.
Hmmm, what about someone who refuses to wear shirts they didnt but on the internet? and makes me feel bad for buying two pairs of jeans on sale at jcpenny? theres nothing wrong with department store sales when my only other option is…well…short. right?
I think there’s a third option: Becoming a cog that bounces around inside the machine, monkeying things up. The machinists will never find you, because you’ll always be in a different place. If enough of us cogs choose the bouncing life, eventually the whole machine will become bouncy and start to serve us instead of the other way ’round…

How old *is* Girl? I never really thought about it until now.

Now I want to know the cure…
August 18th, 2009 at 9:04 am
…so THAT’S what my problem is! Good to know, lol.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Panel four is great – a little bit of meta-ness in that we don’t seem to know how old Girl is either.

Late 20s?

But, I guess that time travel negates all. I wonder if Cat and Girl have a wife?

Sickle Cell Bohemia awareness month would be so annoying.

Oh god oh god oh god! What’s the cure?! What’s… the… CURE!? It’s too late for me but maybe I can still save the young…

@ Ian R: “T-rex arms” Hilarious and apt.
I am so glad there is Cat and Girl. Thank you for creating this, Dorothy.

I love girl response in panel 4, “I know stuff.”
August 18th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
damn apostrophe misuse. “girl’s response”

As someone nearing 31, this particular strip… worries me.

Did I mention he was working to get his VW Westfalia van to run on biodiesel? It’s bad.

Honestly people, the cure is terrible. How terrible? Let’s just put it like this;
Two pale figures
Ache in silence
Timeless
In the quiet ground
Side by side
In age and sadness
I watched
And acted wordlessly
As piece by piece
You performed your story
Moving through an unknown past
Dancing at the funeral party

Bah; the cure’s not that bad.
A friend of mine is nearing 40 and I got her to read _Walden_ for the first time… she didn’t keel over and die (yet).

It doesn’t matter what your responsibility to the machine may be. You either keep spinning or get ground to dust. Just say’n…

i’ve been reading a tonne of “dykes to watch out for” and i now think that mo’s case of scb is terminal.

I love girl and cat but I can’t read it any more because it makes me too depressed.

This is great news! I still have a decade until I have to worry about becoming a loser…
