The Loneliest Number
June 1st, 2009

At some point in June we will be marking the tenth anniversary of Cat and Girl. I hope that sounds as scary to you as it does to me. We ought to mark the occasion in some fashion, right? But how?
Not entirely unrelated: I have just unearthed my vast lost archive of original Cat and Girl drawings dating as far back as March 17, 2000. Now they are available for purchase. As is everything.

You know what IP anniversaries are great for?
T-shirts!
I also think tying some loose ends would be a good idea. Does the Boogeyman get that job?
Commentary! Do you have anything to say of the past 10 years of strips that doesn’t feel like a dissection of the strip’s essence? Free excerpts from the previous books are included! Graphical breakdowns, ala Very Small Array, would be interesting.
Animation! Cat and Girl vs. the moving image.
Discounts! 10% for the 10th Anniversary!

Well when most people do celebrate a comic they make a flash video. Usually involving some topic that is the epitome of the comic and it’s brand of entertainment. Some people like to do a montage. other like to recreate and old forgotten style that was used around the conception of the series. Or you can do something simple like slap a big ol’ cake in the comic and have all of everyone party around it and eat it. You can always do something completely unexpected. Something that would totally throw this comic on its head. There’s my idea. Hope they were useful.

I’m thinking a full-color strip would be nice.

You could riff off the “NO ONE UNDERSTANDS ME. THANK GOD!” comic somehow… like say “No one understands me. Thank God!” on the front and then one the back maybe something like “Cat and Girl. Still obscure after all these years.” or “Cat and Girl. Ten years on and it still doesn’t make sense.” Something like that. But perhaps with better copy…

… and on a black t-shirt of course…

How many are there that are not included in Book 1? Enough for a zine, or will you save them up for Book 3?

I’m going to agree with C. up there and say T-shirt sales and commentary would be a nice way to celebrate ten years. Or maybe a bar meetup, but that may be a bit much.

Oh, and huge congrats.

you could write a script then take the day off while fans draw a panel each
then get someone to make a flash app that shows a random selection of panels, which change when clicked on
that’d be boss

Old tshirt designs moved over to printing on American Apparel. Please. I will purchase some.

Thank you for all the comics!
You could take a week off or something and make a big front page ad for the donation derby, mentioning the ten years. No one would dare call that selling out. That way with all the money (!) you could get another taste of convenience and luxury, lose it (nothing lasts) and have stuff to write about for many years still.

Cat and Girl would be old enough to go on a Pokémon training adventure!

Thanks for all the toons. I would like to see you do a new strip in your old style for the occasion. Your graphic style has changed considerably over the years. It would be cool to see you try to recreate your earliest cartooning process, like watching Edison recreate his first successful light bulb.

I’ll celebrate the 10th anniversary by ending a long cycle of personal procrastination and finally ordering copies of the books!
Can you have diet intentions?

Cartoons too old to be part of Book One are sadly, simply nonexistent in any kind of print-level quality.
As for the rest: thinking, thinking, thinking…

How about a guest week?
