I remember when I was 14 I told a friend I still liked a song from the previous month. He said only 13-year-olds listened to it by then.

Looking back, I realise he was just trying to be the first among us to get into cultural disposability.

I was into this comic for the first two panels, then it got too popular and I was so over it. By the last couple it had become a parody of itself and I was able to enjoy it ironically. Now that it’s over I say we wait ten years then revive it.

Curiously, there’s always one person who is first to desire the punchline on a t-shirt, but this utterance seems one-up proof–no one says, for instance, “I wanted this comic on a shirt first.”

I embraced the out of touch Eurocentric preening of self -proclaimed high culture as a counterpoint to the insincere obsession with mainstream cultural icons and infantile attempts to return to childhood through nostalgia of twenty-something hipsters before any of you.

Did you really like Lamp before it was a meme, or are you just saying that because you see a bunch of people proclaiming to like things before others liked it?

I’m currently into 19th century American utopian communities, altered fashion dolls, the Tale Type index, Burl Ives, The James Tiptree Awards, and walking to work. None of my friends care – we just catch up on what everyone’s family is up to and then play Scrabble.
