Spending time alone can make you say the most random things. I certainly relate to this character the most, even though I no longer spend the majority of my time alone.
He is referring to that old poem (allegedly) by Pastor Martin, so I guess it’s not that random, but I do see and agree upon your point
He might be referring to the poem, but seeing as how there weren’t many plates in the poem I’d say that made it quite a random comment.

People surrounded by friends don’t know how satisfying it is to have an argument out loud with themselves.
The peom does coclude with the protaganist being alone with no support. So i would say it makes total scary sense.
