I’ve only seen bits of Cremaster at the Guggenheim exhibit a couple of years ago, and the murder scene is creepy, but I think laughter might not be such a bad response. I’m reminded of my hipster days when I saw 30 minutes of Warhol’s Sleep and I got mad when people hooted and cheered at the first cut edit. It was much later that I realized my sense of reverence might be misplaced at a Warhol film. It’s not like we were going to wake the guy up. indrifan 11.19.07Oh, come on, Gary Gilmore was fuckin hilarious. Matthew Barney is best taken with a few laughs. Jimmy 11.19.07you saw cremaster? awesome! i got to see 1, 2, 4,& 5 here in san antonio at the IMAX theater a couple years ago. it was crazy! then, i bought cremaster 3 and went nuts watching it over the weekend. grizlybexar 11.19.07If you aren’t just talking about The Order (the half hour long segment of the three hour long film) I am jealous as hell that you got hold of a bootleg of that, cuz i’d so like to see it again. Ben Turk 11.19.07It was playing at a movie theater and I enjoyed it a good deal more than I thought I would. Utah IS “The Beehive State.” dorothy 11.20.07to Ben Turk: I’m a jerk, I don’t know what Cremaster is, but I’ll find out now.. for sure. Thanks for all you do, hon. You’ve got smarts like I wish I had!! Lana 11.21.07I’ve been meaning to see those films but I wasn’t sure if it would be better to view them chronologically or in numerical order or if it even matters. Still not sure :/ Mel 11.21.07Grizlybear- that’s “The Order” a small segment in the middle of Cremaster 3, which is the middle of the entire 5 piece cycle, which involves the entered apprentice climbing the guggenheim rotunda and facing challenges based on each of the other films while richard serra pours molten vaseline into a spiral trough. Cremaster 3 in it’s entirity is probably 4 times that long and is about a mason climbing to the spire atop the chrysler building while a bunch of 70’s muscle cars smash an inhumanly thin corpse-woman to bits in the lobby. the rest of it wasn’t and probably never will be released on video. i understand that Barny doesn’t want to compromise his vision by allowing the films to be shown on small screens, but… damn it, i live in the midwest and don’t know when i’ll get a chance to see them again. Ben Turk 11.27.07If you ever have the opportunity and three hours to spare, see Cremaster 3. I saw its European premiere when I was 18 (long story) and it made me realize I was different from the other kids…I knew the true meaning of a dude flinging molten vaseline after a lady cuts up potatoes with her prosthetic feet and uses them to unbalance the Chrysler building. I’m assuming you’re discussing part of the Cremaster Cycle, by Matthew Barney. How was no. 2? I haven’t seen any of Barney’s other works, except for Drawing Restraint 9, and that movie was way too slow and pretentious for my tastes.
